- 1533: Willem of Orange is born (d. 1584)
-1520, 1552 and 1562: storms expose the ruins of Batavorum Lugdunum (a Roman fortress) in the North Sea dunes between Katwijk and Noordwijk. Batavorum Lugdunum was a fortress outpost on the northern boundary of the Roman Empire (circa 12 AD).
